| I am a speech and language therapist researching and practicing in the field of Facilitated Communication (FC) for 16 years. This is a form of alternative communication that teaches children and adults who do not speak, or whose speech is only partially effective, to point for communication purposes. Early reports that FC enabled people to spell out complex language were not substantiated by research findings. More recent research is showing strong evidence that the introduction of FC can enable people to communicate for the first time, enhancing quality of life and reducing frustration. Some people who have followed this training method now type independently. | ||
